5 a side soccer blitz

On Monday 23rd March some of our Sixth Class boys took part in an FAI 5 a side soccer blitz in Irishtown stadium. This was a great chance for us to test our skills against some other schools in Dublin. Each match lasted 10 minutes and was played on an astro pitch. With 6 teams in our group we played 5 matches initially.

We got off to a great start when we won our first match 3-1 against Burrow, with Conor Grogan bagging himself a hat-trick, Lorcan steady at the back and Khevish working his socks off up front. Our second opponents, Scoil Chaitríona, were a step up and we were 2-0 down fairly quickly. Jeremy got us a nice goal to bring us back into it but we conceded a couple more to lose our second match. In our third match against Gaelscoil Uí Earcháin, we quickly went 2-0 down and it was looking bad for us. However, the boys showed great character and with Conor and Alex chipping in with goals we got better as the match went on. Kaylem kept things tight in defence and we ran out 6-2 winners.

In our fourth match we played St Kevins who were quite a good side and despite a great team effort and a late goal from Khevish, we lost this match. Our final group game came against Bluebell. Keith had been doing brilliantly in goals but we decided to give him a rest and Dean took over. We also brought in Ty for his first appearance. Dean made some very brave saves and Ty worked extremely hard up front, but Bluebell were just too good for us.

We faced an anxious wait on other results to see whether we had qualified for the semi finals, but eventually word came through that we had made it! However we were drawn to face Bluebell again. All the boys put in a huge effort and Alex got on the score sheet again, as well as putting in a huge amount of chasing, but once again we had to admit that Bluebell were just a bit better than us on the day.

Well done to all the squad who put in a super effort and represented the school very well: Keith, Lorcan, Kaylem, Alex, Conor, Dean, Ty, Khevish, Jeremy
